Antioxidants are substances that have cancer-fighting properties. Researchers are working to find better ways to get these compounds into our bodies, more quickly. Dr. Amal Kaddoumi in the University of Louisiana at Monroe Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences is collaborating with Cristina Sabliov, LSU AgCenter Biological and Agricultural Engineering; to develop a way to get these antioxidants into the body efficiently.
The problem is that the human body has mechanisms that don’t allow all of the antioxidants into the blood. To bypass this they are trying nanoparticles to deliver the antioxidants to the body.
Vitamin C and E are examples of antioxidants.
These antioxidants have potential for disease prevention and protect the body from damaging effect of free radicals involved in cancer, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes.
